Lawinen reissen oben an

Ben

One evening with young scientists on snow and avalanche.

¨Never seen before! That’s for sure.”

The riders community is happy to see the lastest snow scientists came up with. Movies show how crytals transform and how cracks race through the snow. No worries, we won’t leave you with complicated discussions. We’ll put on what’s happening beneath your skis and boards when you ride – 256 colors. And also we won’t skip the good winter vibes: Pics from all over the Alps make clear why we’re all crazy about snow, but also want to ride in a sensible way. And don’t believe you seen it all – we’ll come up with new stuff – that’s for sure!

Hope to see you on one of the evenings:
Monday 1 February 2016 19:00 BÄCKEREI, INNSBRUCK
Thursday 4 February 2016 19:00 PATAGONIA STORE, MUNICH

We practice what we preach. Sign in for one of our field trainings and see how theory transforms into practice. We will show you out in nature what you know from the talk and our videos.

Sign in for field trainings!

We thank all our supporters who help us pull up the shows: Patagonia, Alpenverein Bayreuth, “Bäckerei” Kulurbackstube, SAAC and SpurArt

Check out the workshops.

hope to see you there!

Sinking in white chaos?

Ben

We hope you did not sink in snow yet. Do you believe that the snow cover ressembles a patchwork rug? In other words, do you believe that snow is utter disorder? I mean when I see the snow stars on my shoulder, when I am on the chair on one of those powder days and see its perfectly shaped corners, I personally don’t.

We tried to collect information from different scientific works adressing the variable nature of the snowpack. And there is – you might not believe it – quite a lot around. Check it out!

This metaphor on the patchwork rug was created by a famous long bearded personality popular for his brilliant thoughts on reducing risk in avalanche terrain. I almost tend to say Mr Personality – but this is allusion with a famous ski movie which is really not to be adressed in this context.

Talk — BÄCKEREI INNSBRUCK

SpurArt invited us to give a talk in the Bäckerei in March 2013.

¨Never seen before! That’s for sure.”

Innsbruck’s riders community was happy to see the lastest snow scientists came up with. Movies showed how crytals transform and how cracks race through the snow. But still the good winter vibes were not missing. Pics from all over the Alps made clear why we’re all  crazy about snow, but also the risk it brings. A current case study illustrated the risk and brought to mind the skills we need for travelling the backcountry. Finally we closed our presentation with the next days’ weather and avalanche forecast.

Hope to be there again this year before winter hits.  Bäckerei, SpurArt and we will keep you in the loop!

Hope to see you there!

Terrain traps

Talk — ALPINFORUM INNSBRUCK

In November 2013 we gave a talk at the Alpinforum in Innsbruck. The aim was not to come up with something new, but to shed light on an old story: Munter’s factor “terrain”. It is only one factor out of three, besides the “human factor” and the “avalanche conditions”, but in certain situations it seems crucial not to be ignored – in particular when planning your trip and making your way through the back country.
A couple of years ago Canadian avalanche experts had brought up the AVALUATOR tool to evaluate avalanche danger based on the present avanlache conditions and the terrain features characteristic to a certain route. With the AVALUATOR terrain features are explicitly considered in the risk eveluation process. Above slope angle, tree density, slope shape also the term “terrain traps” appears. “Terrain traps” comprise all sorts of terrain features that might cause injury or deep burial and bear a serious risk for us. From our point of view a very valuable tool for both touring and freeriding.

Check out the outline of the talk on terrain traps and take a look at the latest version of the AVALUATOR !

Soon there will be an article in bergundsteigen summing up on terrain characteristics, their role in the risk evaluation process and when to give them more weight in the decision process.
